5. Service to Country: Personnel Policies and the Transformation of Western Militaries, USD (AT&L), June 2004-September 2006
This volume, edited by Cindy Williams and Curtis Gilroy, drew from papers presented at a 2004 conference in Brussels, Belgium and jointly sponsored by the Ambassador to the U.S. Mission in NATO (Hon Nicholas Burns) and DOD (Hon Dr .David Chu). The book explores manpower and personnel issues facing the NATO alliance in light of the complex and evolving security environment of the 21st century. The topics include the costs of a volunteer force, the challenges in transitioning to a volunteer force, the demographic and social context, and the role of reserve forces. Involved in all aspects of the book's development, Strategic Analysis provided advisory support, research assistance, and writing in the preparation of various book chapters.
