2. New Reserves, ASD (RA), November 2005-Early 2007
In November 2005, the Reserve Forces Policy Board and the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs hosted a symposium on The New Reserves: Strategic in Peace, Operational in War. The symposium presented evidence and established facts regarding Reserve force utilization and personnel management in view of expanded use of Reserve forces today and anticipated future demands for their use. Panels addressed the following areas: use of Reserves and stress on the force, recruiting and retention, burdens of activation, and compensation and benefit structure for the future. The leading-edge research presented at this conference will be published in a volume, co-edited by a member of the SA staff and a senior DOD official. This volume will be the first of its kind to consider these various issues affecting the Reserve forces during an era where the Reserves have made a more significant operational contribution to the total force.
